Can creativity help make our world a better place? Marci Segal, creativity expert and founder of World Creativity and Innovation Day believes so.
What is World Creativity and Innovation Day?
Established "to emphasize the importance of using new thinking to create a decent life for all on a sustainable planet," World Creativity and Innovation Day invites us to set aside time for experimentation, innovation, and creation.
WCID is celebrated on April 21st, but you can start celebrating early with World Creativity and Innovation Week. WCIW begins on April 15th and ends on World Creativity and Innovation Day, April 21st
You might be wondering, where can I celebrate WCID, and better yet, how? Your local library is a fantastic place to spark new ideas and activate your creativity. Below are five ways you can celebrate this day of creativity at the library:
Sign Up For an Upcoming Event
Interested in learning a new skill? Or digging into one of your hobbies? Libraries often offer a wide range of free events to the public and are a great way to experiment and get inspired. Check your local library's online event schedule and register for an event that piques your interest!
Test Your Mapmaking Skills
From developing innovative keys and legends to creating eye-catching colorful designs, Mapmaking is a wonderful way to get creative and utilize your problem-solving skills. Try making a map of your library, outlining your library's help desk, restrooms, and other helpful points of interest. Or head to your library's archives and try recreating a map from the past. You can draw free hand or use some geometry tools to create perfectly clean lines. Either way, grab some colored pencils and put your mapmaking skills to the test.
Interview a Librarian
Have you ever wondered how librarians spend their day? What decisions do they have to make each day? Interviewing a librarian is a wonderful way to learn more about the profession and exercise your interviewing skills. Call your local library and ask to schedule some time to speak with a librarian. Before your meeting, prepare 5-10 interview questions to help guide your discussion. Librarians are a wealth of knowledge. Get ready to learn something interesting!
Volunteer
Libraries are essential to our communities. They provide access to information, resources, and training that benefits the public in a variety of ways. Volunteering is not only a great way to give back, but can also help you understand the needs of your community. Who knows, you might also come up with so new ideas for supporting your local branch while you're there!
Grab a Book and Read
It may sound a bit cliche, but reading at the library had to make it on our list. In today's busy world, filled with distractions, it can be hard to find dedicated time for reading. A library is a great place to create quiet moments for yourself and dive into titles that have been sitting on your reading list.
Reading opens our minds to new stories, new perspectives, and new ways to imagine our world. Have a notebook nearby to capture thoughts, questions, and inspiration as you read. You never know how your notes might come in handy.
There are so many ways to celebrate World Creativity and Innovation Day! How will you use your library to celebrate?
