Hoopla Digital has announced a new partnership with TED that will bring hundreds of talks and educational videos to public library patrons. The content is available through five new BingePasses covering subjects such as math, climate, space, health and professional development.
The partnership adds 200 recorded TED presentations and more than 400 TED-Ed lessons to Hoopla's educational catalog. Patrons can access each collection for seven days with one Hoopla borrow.

The TED Talks BingePass includes presentations from well-known speakers such as Brené Brown, Al Gore, Malcolm Gladwell and Jane Goodall. More talks will be added to the collection quarterly.
Hoopla has also created four subject-based collections using videos from TED-Ed. These include Math in Real Life, Our Changing Climate, Out of This World and Getting Under Our Skin.
The TED-Ed videos are generally between five and 10 minutes long and combine animation with lessons developed by educators and experts. Their shorter length makes them useful for students exploring a subject, adults interested in learning something new or librarians searching for accessible videos to accompany a program or reading list.
"We're thrilled to partner with a leader in the educational and professional development space as highly respected as TED," said Cat Zappa, vice president of digital acquisitions at Hoopla Digital.
Zappa said the new collections are part of Hoopla's continuing effort to expand the educational and family-friendly videos available through public libraries.
How the BingePasses Work
Instead of borrowing each video separately, patrons can use one borrow to access an entire TED collection for seven days. The videos can be watched on demand without advertisements or a separate subscription.
Libraries pay for the initial BingePass borrow through Hoopla's pay-per-use model. Once the pass has been borrowed, patrons can watch multiple videos from that collection without creating additional charges during the seven-day period.
While many TED videos are already available online, grouping them into themed collections gives patrons an easier way to browse related subjects. It also places the content alongside the eBooks, audiobooks, movies and other digital resources they may already access through their library.
The collections could be especially helpful for libraries promoting lifelong learning, homework support or professional development. A patron interested in climate change, for example, can explore a full group of related lessons without having to locate reliable videos individually.
The five TED BingePasses are available through participating Hoopla libraries in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Patrons can visit Hoopla Digital or use the Hoopla app to find out whether the collections are offered by their library.
