The Cinema Studies Department at NYU's illustrious Tisch School of the Arts will be conducting an information session for those interested in pursuing a Master's Degree in Moving Image Archive and Preservation (MIAP).
MIAP will train MA students for careers in film, video, new media, and digital works. According to the program website, students will participate in a hands-on study with projects that "use real collections and require collaboration with working archivists." It is a two-year interdisciplinary course of study.
Subjects covered in the MA program will include theories, methods, and practices of moving image archiving and preservation. The courses will focus on "conservation and preservation; collection management; metadata standards and application; copyright and legal issues; moving image curation; the cultures of museums, archives and libraries and the history of cinema and television," reads the program's online description.
This information session will be the last opportunity to make face-to-face contact using an online platform with the program's staff before the admissions department begins its work. The session will be held on December 1st, 2021 at 12:00 PM EST. Those interested in taking part should RSVP using the online form at https://tisch.nyu.edu/cinema-studies/events/fall-2021/miap-info-session-2021-12-01.
The session will provide information about the "application process, curriculum, faculty, internship program, and the professional outcomes of MIAP alumni," reads the RSVP document on the program's server.
People with this degree can go on to work as projectionists, digital scholarship librarians, reference librarians, and archivists for AV collections. That is by no means an exhaustive list.
The Tisch School of the Arts was founded at NYU in 1965. Only the best are admitted to this elite university program. Their rigorous admissions process ensures that only students of the highest caliber, drive, and talent enter and participate.
Alumni have been successful in the arts: creating HBO Max feature presentations, writing well-received novels, staging acclaimed musical theater offerings, and presenting important works of visual art.
The Cinema Studies program at Tisch School of the Arts recently received grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for over a half-million dollars. The grant from the NEH will specifically provide scholarships for the MIAP.
