Registration is now open for the 10th Annual Summer Institute in Digital Literacy July 10 – 15, 2022. This week-long professional development program is available both online and in-person at the downtown Chicago campus of National Louis University. Focusing on the intersections between media and digital literacy, this program is designed for K-12 educators, school leaders, higher education faculty and researchers, academic and public librarians, creative media professionals, and all media literacy educators.
Throughout the 42-hour program, participants will engage in conversations with professionals and experts, advance digital literacy competencies through hands-on learning experiences, and create a digital resource that can be implemented in a relevant professional context.
Regular enrollment is $500 for the institute’s online program and $900 for the in-person Chicago-based program. For graduate students, there is also the option to complete the program for grad credits ($900 online and $1300 in-person).
The key program elements of the Summer Institute in Digital Literacy are connect, guide, and create. Participants can connect through conversational sparks, exploring topics like persuasion and propaganda, learning through a social justice lens, and the practice of digital inquiry.
Participants are guided by keynote speakers and a wide range of workshops. There are plenty of workshops focusing on the field of education, with titles including, Anti-Racist Teaching and Learning, Field Trips as a Journey of Learning, and Visible Thinking for Deeper Learning. Fully dissect digital literacy through workshops like Mapping Digital Storytelling, Copyright? Copy-wrong?, and Myth of the Digital Narrative.
Using digital technologies, teams of two will create digital texts and curate resources that relate to professional needs. In addition to learning skills relevant to a specific workplace, participants will discuss big picture issues related to digital literacy.
Although the Summer Institute in Digital Literacy is an intensive course, it is also structured like a “summer camp for grownups”. In addition to developing their professional careers, participants will also have the chance to connect with other driven individuals around the world.
