In this Author POV feature, we spotlight Chop-it-Chip, a charming and instructional picture book that follows a young chef on a global cooking adventure. In this first installment, Chip travels to the United States, learns how to bake an apple pie from scratch, and hears the story of Johnny Appleseed for the very first time. The narrative blends storytelling with step-by-step illustrations, guiding readers through the baking process and culminating in a kid-friendly recipe included at the end of the book.
Can you introduce your book for librarians who may be discovering it for the first time?
Chop-it-Chip is the story of a young chef going on a quest to learn not only about new foods, but also stories and cultures, across the world. Chip journeys to the United States, helps make an apple pie from scratch, and hears the story of Johnny Appleseed for the first time. The story and illustrations show how to bake the pie, and the recipe is in the back for anyone who wants to try it at home for themselves.
What inspired you to write this book, and what core themes do you hope readers take away from it?
I was inspired to write Chop-it-Chip because I feel like many people, children and adults, want to learn to cook or bake, but don't have anyone in their family to show them. I wanted children to take more of an interest in cooking and baking, and where their food comes from. I also wanted to show children how universal cooking is, and how food brings people together across cultures.
What kind of readers or patrons do you see this book resonating with most? (age range, grade levels, reading interests)?
This book is aimed at children ages 3-7, but anyone who wants to learn how to bake a pie will enjoy it!
What themes or discussion topics do you hope librarians highlight when recommending the book?
The book is highly instructional and entertaining. Anyone who follows the steps and recipe will create a delicious apple pie, and will enjoy seeing two children from different sides of the world meet and share this experience in the kitchen.
