Tohru is a bored young citizen who prefers to spend his time in the vibrant Wired World, hanging out with his gang Steppen Wolf as they pilot their virtual suits (called “simulacrums”) and hack into sites for fun and the challenge. When Tohru's friend and mentor Yuuya decides to call it quits, the Steppen Wolf try one last ostentatious hack but are mistaken for members of the terrorist group Fe Tao, and Yuuya is killed—in both the virtual and literal senses—by the government military forces of FLAK. Looking for vengeance, Tohru allows himself to be recruited by FLAK. Meanwhile, in his personal life, Tohru meets a girl who seems to exist only in the Wired World. Naturally, these seemingly disparate aspects of his life are related, and Tohru will find his alliances and his ideas concerning justice shifting before an inevitable showdown to save the world. Based on a console video game, this four-episode OVA (original video animation) tries to cram a little too much story into too short a running time. While this keeps the pace brisk, it also results in an uneven storyline that leaves too many significant revelations until the last episode. Rated TV-MA for violence, sexual assault, and female nudity, this dual-language disc features DVD extras including textless songs and trailers. A strong optional purchase. Aud: P. (L. Martincik)
