This half-hour animated featurette tells a visually enjoyable story of a mischievous young cat who runs away from home, becomes lonesome after having some fun in the big city, and returns to the family fold. Directed by top-notch ex- Disney animator Don Bluth (The Secret of N.I.M.H.), Banjo the Woodpile Cat makes up for its spare story line with highly detailed animation and a wonderfully inventive use of montage (especially during the song and dance numbers). And Scatman Crothers is typically endearing as the voice of Crazy Legs, Banjo's amiable guide through the glittering night life of Salt Lake City. Recommended.
