This wonderfully different and thoroughly entertaining anime, consisting of 26 episodes, follows a teen named Koyuki, whose chance encounter with a bizarre-looking dog launches him on an amazing musical journey. After Koyuki saves the dog from a group of nasty children, he returns it to Ryusuke, a guitarist who was once friends with the founder of Dying Breed, Koyuki's favorite band. After Ryusuke gives Koyuki a guitar, the latter discovers his hidden musical talent, and before long he's playing in Ryusuke's band, BECK. However, Koyuki is still in high school and therefore has to face the usual teenage hassles over the course of his non-musical day. But the heart and soul of BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad is the music (this series is for serious music lovers), which is ripe with references to legendary American rock and blues icons (dropping hints would be a spoiler—but prepare to be amused at the sly yet subtle homages). Featuring animation that is consistently bold and stylish, characters who are genuinely appealing and fully dimensional, and music that truly rocks, BECK is one of the more original and rewarding anime titles to cross the Pacific. Presented in a dual-language boxed set, suitable for 15-up, DVD extras include audio commentaries and music videos. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (P. Hall)
