Part of Maryknoll's Children of the Earth series, this video takes a look at a typical day in the life of a 14-year-old girl in Guatemala and a 15-year-old boy in El Salvador. Nati's life appears considerably more stable and happy than Marvin's, primarily because his family lived as refugees during El Salvador's civil war, and they have only recently resettled in a cooperative village back home. Teachers will find the tape's Guatemala segment a good choice for students as young as third grade, while the El Salvador portion will be a valuable teaching tool for students in high school. It should serve not only to help students see, hear and get a sense of everyday life in these countries, but also give them an understanding of lives haunted by hard labor, political violence and warfare. Highly recommended. Other titles in the series include: South America Close-Up: Peru/Brazil, Africa Close-Up: Egypt/Tanzania and Asia Close-Up: Japan/Cambodia. Aud: I, J, H, P. (R. Reagan)
Central America Close-Up: Guatemala/El Salvador
