When Wilbur's leash breaks and he ends up missing, it's up to dog sitter Maya and her friends to find him. But how? Gaby, Maya's annoying but smart little sister, thinks she knows. As “Gaby Suavicita, private eye,” she uses the clue of a pile of sand to lead them to the answer. Along the way, the kids learn all about sand--its origins, physical properties, and even how it is used in the art of sand painting--as well as (with some adult help) general principles and vocabulary relating to the scientific method. While this program tries to be educational, it spends far too much time developing the rather convoluted plot, with the result that the short science (and even shorter art) sections feel more like slow-moving interruptions (that are not helped by the very wooden adult actors who sound like they're reading from cue cards). DVD bonus materials include a slideshow and a study guide with plenty of sand-related facts, questions, lesson plans, and activities (but it's all standard science curriculum that stands alone without having to watch the program). Optional. Aud: E, I. (E. Gieschen)
