Based on the 2014 picture book by author and illustrator Adam Auerbach—inspired by the author's listening to Richard Wagner's “Ring Cycle”—this iconographic-animated adaptation narrated by Susie Berneis follows young Norse goddess Edda, who travels from the comfort of her magical realm of Asgard to Earth to experience her first day of school. A definite dichotomy exists between home and the classroom: Edda is used to playing with narwhals and other creatures, and doesn't understand why she must sit still (and gets a time out); each meal in Asgard is a sharable feast, but lunchroom kids don't trade; and waiting in line and writing assignments are not exactly fun. But the little Valkyrie eventually finds inspiration for a story, and makes a visit home with a new friend that helps turn things around. Featuring a jaunty soundtrack and amusing pen-and-ink artwork, bonus features include a read-along option. Recommended. Aud: K, E, P. (J. Williams-Wood)
