Based on Jim Davis' popular comic strip, this three-tale compilation of televised specials featuring the lasagna-loving, portly feline opens with Here Comes Garfield (1982), in which our reluctant hero must free his constant foil and rival, dopey dog Odie, from the pound. Next up is Garfield On the Town (1983), in which the irreverent cat runs away from hapless owner Jon (who is trying to take him to the vet) and ends up wandering in a rough part of town, where he meets his mother, a (gasp!) "mouser" among legions of stray kitties. Finally, Garfield Gets a Life (1991) is a very funny piece in which Garfield attempts to turn dorky Jon into a love machine for the singles scene. Sardonically (though sensitively) written by Davis and featuring Lorenzo Music as the voice of Garfield, this trio of cat-tastic tales on an otherwise extra-less disc is sure to be popular. Recommended. [Note: on July 27, the three-disc Garfield and Friends, Volume 1 will debut on DVD, priced at $39.98.] (T. Keogh)
