After Muppets Harry and Betty argue over a basketball game, Karen (an adult) takes the pair to a courtroom where they learn about all the people (judge, jury, defendant, court reporter, etc.) and watch a portion of a trial in progress. Throughout the video, Karen constantly reiterates that people must tell the truth, and continually refers to the importance of the "victim/witness advocate." Where the tape is heading becomes a bit clearer during the trial when 8-year-old "Sarah" is seen testifying against a man shown sitting next to the defense attorney. Although the program says nothing about child abuse, the repeated references to the victim/witness advocate and the tone of the mock trial make it pretty clear what's happening. Ultimately, this tape is about going to court as a victim/witness, not an explanation of how the legal system operates. And, while the intent of the program is admirable, the particular focus of the tape makes it more suitable for use in social organizations or schools--who may want to consider it. Not a necessary purchase for public libraries. (Available from: KIDSRIGHTS, 10100 Park Cedar Drive, Charlotte, NC 28210; (800) 892-KIDS.)
