Singer-songwriter Laurie Berkner's video songbook consists mostly of Laurie on guitar backed by a keyboard player singing and playing before a live audience while superimposed on an open, animated songbook. On the bright side, the songs are original, Laurie has a lot of enthusiasm, and the kids like her. On the less bright side, this video doesn't measure up to the best and most innovative kids' music vids, such as Eddie Coker: Sock Lobster (VL-9/01) or Joe Scruggs: Joe's First Video (VL-4/90), which feature witty and sparkling songs presented in a visually imaginative way, as opposed to simply being a "recorded concert." Although Berkner's songs include cute titles like "Song in My Tummy" and "Pig on Her Head," ultimately this plays just like what it is: a filmed performance in front of children. With so many better choices out there, this one is an optional purchase. Aud: K, E, P. (R. Ray)
