Inspired by the Earth Charter, a global initiative launched in 2000 under the direction of UNESCO to declare “fundamental ethical principles for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the 21st century,” this program distills eight overarching principles from the original multi-article document, essentially translating it into an understandable and relevant “ethical foundation” for young children. Each of Little Earth Charter's animated, four-and-a-half-minute segments covers one topic (including “Life,” “Family,” “Earth,” “Peace,” “Love,” and “Future”), which is briefly explained to main character Rosie, after which a verse (on that particular concept) is sung from the “Follow the Charter” theme song. Although uncomplicated, the segments still manage to avoid oversimplifying these rather large subjects; for example, a big concept like “peace” is explained as “cooperating with others to figure out problems without fighting and solutions that are fair to everyone.” Recommended.
