A twelve-part series designed to supplement preschool to second grade mathematics curriculum, Math Monsters employs computer-animated characters to represent functions, symbols, numbers or mathematical instruments, with each program featuring a problem focusing on a particular area of mathematics. In volume one, Data Collection, the monsters decide to open a pancake restaurant and set about answering the question "what kind of pancakes should we serve?" by collecting, organizing, and interpreting relevant data and then using communication, reasoning, and representation to problem solve. In addition, real-life applications are demonstrated as students visit a farm and are shown how the farmer collects and uses data to care for the animals. A 128-page book accompanies the series and includes pre-viewing activities, "pause-points" for discussion and problem solving, post-viewing activities, vocabulary lists, reproducible handouts and worksheets, and two bibliographies for teachers and a separate one for students. The series was created in cooperation with the National Council of Teachers of Math, and provides a list for standards content. A well made series with short "catchy" songs and simple storylines that are very appropriate and appealing for the target age group, Math Monsters is highly recommended. Other titles in the series include: The Making of Tens, Geometry, Mapping, Time, Patterns, and Computers. Aud: K, E, P. (L. Stevens)
