Adapted from the 2008 picture book by prolific and popular children's book author/illustrator Rosemary Wells, the animated Otto Runs for President follows a hotly contested election race for student president at the all-canine Barkadelphia Elementary School. Initially, it looks like the contest will be between vapid valley pup Tiffany and dunderheaded jock dawg Charles, who both make absurd promises (“skateboarding in the halls!”) and launch false smear campaigns against one another while their moms and dads offer to use their pull to help their spoiled offspring. But the political landscape changes when Otto decides to toss his collar into the ring (after collecting the requisite 50 paw prints needed for candidacy). Unlike his opponents, Otto takes the unusual step of actually listening to his potential constituents, and makes a list of useful suggestions ranging from creating a homework helpline to planning a class field trip. The whole production features top-drawer talent, including director Virginia Wilkos, voice chameleon Diana Canova, and musical wizard Ernest V. Troost. DVD extras include an interview with Wells, and a read-along option. Recommended. Aud: K, E, P. (R. Pitman)
