Based on the 2001 picture book written by Eileen Spinelli and illustrated by Jane Dyer, this iconographic animated program follows a gifted spider named Sophie (who has the body of an arachnid but human features—including blonde hair topped by a beret) as she moves out on her own into Beekman's Boardinghouse. Hoping to help spruce up the drab surroundings—and show off her incredible web work—Sophie tries to impress her “neighbors” with homemade gifts (curtains, a new suit, etc.) but gets an unenthusiastic reception from the insect-averse roommates (one person even climbs out onto the roof to get away!). After many years (in spider time, anyway), Sophie wears down from relocating and finds refuge in a young pregnant woman's sewing basket, spending her last bits of strength weaving together a beautiful blanket—the titular tour de force—for the approaching baby. A bit on the melancholy side, Sophie's Masterpiece nicely showcases creativity and determination. Recommended. Aud: K, E, P. (J. Williams-Wood)
