A 1988 Canadian animated children's series that aired in the U.S. in 1994, Stop the Smoggies! follows the adventures of the Suntots, a group of Smurf-like (but not blue) creatures with big hair who live on an island paradise in harmony with nature. But even in paradise trouble abounds in the form of a trio of bad guys called the Smoggies who selfishly pollute their surroundings. All of this is explained in the catchy two-minute theme song that begins each environmentally-related 25-minute episode. This initial volume of Stop the Smoggies! features “Don't Bug the Bugs,” which underscores the fact that everything in nature has a purpose, and “Leader of the Pack,” which is about working together with the natural world instead of abusing it. Boasting fine production values and a laudable pro-environmental message, this is recommended. [Note: five other double-episode volumes of Stop the Smoggies! are also available at the same price.] Aud: K, E, P. (E. Gieschen)
