The pink-hued, sugarcoated, magical escapades of Strawberry Shortcake are showcased in this feature-length CGI-animated movie that kicks off when the titular ‘tween and her friends notice a marked decline in berry picking prospects due to a throng of hungry Berry Birds. When Strawberry (who hears inspirational voices about believing in herself) and Co. (including fast-talking Ginger Snap, pessimistic Raspberry Torte, and melodramatic Lil' Lemon Meringue) decide to turn a barren plot into a garden, the bickering villainous siblings Peculiar Purple Pieman and Miss Grape make up preposterous lies about berry rights and land ownership, after which the Pieman announces his intention to steal everyone's dreams, leading Strawberry and her pals to embark on a journey to help the Sandman restore things to normal. Also featuring a couple of syrupy tunes, this is sure to be popular with the young target audience. Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Williams-Wood)
