Anthony Field directs another musical Wiggles extravaganza perfect for preschool children’s library programs. In Super Wiggles, the main Wiggles cast (Field, Lachlan Gillespie, Simon Pryce, and new member Tsehay Hawkins) joins forces with the Fruit Salad TV Wiggles (Evie Ferris, Kelly Hamilton, Caterina Mete, John Pearce) for an extra special feature about the superheroes we see in our daily lives.
Boasting more than 25 new songs, this hour-long feature gives each Wiggle a chance to shine with their own unique introductions. Tsehay (who replaced Wiggle Emma Watkins in the main quartet) especially stands out with her proclaimed “sunflower power.” The 16-year-old Wiggle dances perhaps more fluidly and energetically than any of the cast and her enthusiastic grin will certainly motivate kids who are singing and dancing along.
The theme of heroes (both every day and superpowered) ties Super Wiggles together, even if not every number fits in with the subject matter. The children’s film introduces us to heroes like Super Granny, Bok the Super Puppet, and ballet hero Chengwu Guo. Most of the Super Wiggles numbers include upbeat dances and ensemble work (with special guests like Captain Feathersword and Paloma the Mermaid). One of the more fantastic numbers has Wiggle Simon’s booming voice leading the boisterous song, “Boom Boom Boom, You’re a Superhero,” in which the Wiggles inspire viewers to be superheroes and strike their own power poses.
Featuring each of the eight Wiggles’ different talents, Super Wiggles is a good time for kids looking to express their inner superheroes. Highly recommended for use in children’s library programs to foster love among preschoolers for music and dance.
