A compilation of three older dinosaur videos (formerly distributed by Twin Tower Enterprises), The World's Greatest Dinosaur Video features hosts Gary Owen and Eric Boardman in an engaging mix of fun facts and just plain fun. In the opening segment "More Dinosaurs," children get an overview of the handling of dinosaurs in movies from the groundbreaking The Lost World (1925) to the more recent Baby (1985). In addition, the cameras visit Vernell, Utah--home of the Dinosaur National Monument, and the Big Apple where, at the New York Natural History Museum, the huge beasts have been meticulously reconstructed. In the next segment, "Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs, the boys take a look at George Bell's humongous cement brontosaurus (which doubles as a gift shop), explore the meteorite theory of dinosaur extinction, get a close-up view of the first dino bone ever discovered (a tooth), and check out Jim Carlson's 1979 discovery which posits the former existence of a dinosaur over 55 ft. tall and weighing some 80 tons--a beast Carlson has dubbed "ultrasaurus." The final segment, "Prehistoric Animals," finds Owen and Boardman in a rest home recalling the good old days when they visited the La Brea Tar Pits and found out about the prehistoric age of mammals when sabre-toothed tigers and camel-like creatures roamed North America. Their quest takes them from the Museum of Natural History in Albuquerque, New Mexico to the British Natural History Museum in London, England. Although dinosaurs perished from the face of the earth some 65 million years ago, interest, especially from young people, is still flourishing. Entertaining and informative, The World's Greatest Dinosaur Video is highly recommended. Editor's Choice. (Available from most distributors.)
