A short, educational video intended to address the issue of racial intolerance, What If Everyone Was Purple? delivers its message via live-action puppetry with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Although that's not a terrible drawback, considering that the target audience is children aged 5-8, the minimal production values and crudely wrought puppets may well matter to viewers who are used to high-caliber puppetry in shows such as Wimzie's House and Sesame Street. Still, the message is important, and the filmmakers confront the issue of racial intolerance head-on and in plain language, using an effective visual metaphor of a child's circle of friends, with the advice to expand that circle to include people who are different. What if everyone was purple? According to our puppet stars, that would make for a boring, monochromatic world. An optional purchase for those without similar diversity education videos for primary grades. Aud: K, E. (P. Van Vleck)
