Narrated by Scott Nilsen, this iconographic-animated adaptation is based on the 2007 picture book written by Elise Broach and illustrated by David Small. Friday is errand day for a jaded boy, who is bored being dragged around by his mother…until a sign at the bakery catches his eye: “Buy a Dozen, Get a Dinosaur.” While the lad can't believe his good luck, his mom is not as pleased when the cashier presents them with a triceratops to take home. Throughout the day, instead of receiving the usual sticker or balloon treats, the duo are offered free gifts of dinosaurs at the doctor's office (with a shot, you get two!), with a haircut, at the movies, the shoe store, and a diner. Wearily, the mother returns home worried about caring for the prehistoric menagerie, but her son has some ideas up his sleeve to show her the usefulness of his new pets. Featuring fun creature vocabulary (velociraptor, pterosaur, etc.) and detailed ink and watercolor drawings, extras include “Sharing Our Story” interview segments with Broach and Small. Recommended. Aud: K, E, P. (J. Williams-Wood)
