Sitting at the southernmost tip of India, Kanyakumari attracts people from all over the world as the city where the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, and the Arabian Sea converge. This Dreamscape adaptation of Rajani LaRocca’s Where Three Oceans Meet, illustrated by Archana Sreenivasan, paints a vibrant picture of the Indian city as a backdrop for an intergenerational story of family, India, and love for both.
Subhadra Newton narrates the travels of a young Indian-American girl named Sejal, her Mommy, and her Pati. The three of them embark on a trip to various cities in Southern India, a place that has deep connections but different meanings for each of them. Pati lives there, Mommy grew up there, and Seja has yet to experience the country firsthand. Chennai is their first stop, where they enjoy crisp paper dosa as big as their table.
They visit friends and family in Coimbatore and go to a temple in Madurai. Last, they stand at the tip of India in Kanyakumari. Sejal, Mommy, and Patty interact with India in their own unique way, from how they order food to how they choose to dress. LaRocca and Sreenivasan take care to highlight the differences between the three generations but also never lose sight of what unites them all.
This short video uses simple language but is layered with potent meaning about the ties that bind one family to India and to each other. Vivid watercolor illustrations bring to life Sejal’s exciting travels in the beautiful country of India. To enrich the viewing experience, Where Three Oceans Meet also features a note from both the author and the illustrator, as well as a map that presents facts about each city Sejal and her family visited in India.
