Stars: D.B. Sweeney (The Cutting Edge, Leather Jackets, Memphis Belle), Kelly Wolf (Graveyard Shift, Triumph of the Spirit), Tovah Feldshuh (Silver Bullet, The Idolmaker, TV's "Holocaust"), Daniel Benzali (A View to a Kill). Inspired by the successful escape of Danish Jews from Nazi-occupied Denmark in 1943, A Day In October stars D.B. Sweeney as Niels Jensen, a young resistance fighter who is wounded during a sabotage mission on a Copenhagen factory. Taken in by Sara Kublitz (Kelly Wolf), an adolescent Jewish girl, Niels is nursed back to health, while Sara's parents fret over the presence of a wanted saboteur in their house. Particularly hamstrung, conscious-wise, is Sara's father, who works in the factory, and is understandably fearful for the lives of his family. Yet, as the Nazi's escalate their aggression against the Jews, even the elder Kublitz realizes that fight or flight are the only options left. Produced by the same team that made the Oscar-winning Babette's Feast, A Day In October is very nicely shot, with authentic-looking sets. Benzali and Feldshuh are fine as the beleaguered parents, and Sweeney and Wolf do a good job with the slowly developing romantic subplot. The cover art for the video, with its emphasis on the action aspect of the film, is a bit misleading, since the movie owes more to Summer of My German Soldier than to Das Boot. Still, with the exception of a few mawkish moments in the script, A Day In October is a good story of the human spirit triumphing over adversity. Audience: While not suitable for young kids, this is still a good film for families with young teens. Those interested in WWII-related materials will also want to see, as will those who recognize Sweeney from the recent popular video hit The Cutting Edge.
