The cinematic equivalent of Zima, Cocktail is a heady brew that is certain to give you an ‘80s hangover. While the sparkling Blu-ray transfer is likely to leave fans of this Razzie Award-winner (for Worst Picture) shaken and stirred, a sober viewing finds that director Roger Donaldson's 1988 film has not aged all that well. Tom Cruise stars in a signature role as Brian, an ambitious and callow youth who must be brought down a peg before finding redemption. An aspiring bartender, Brian is mentored by the cynical Doug (Bryan Brown). The duo become a bottle-juggling, ice-tossing, poetry-spouting sensation until jealousy and betrayal split them up and send Brian to Jamaica, where he meets a New York waitress (Elizabeth Shue). The time capsule soundtrack includes “Don't Worry, Be Happy” and “Kokomo.” But these sweet, era-defining sounds don't mix well with the melodramatic turns and godawful dialogue. And here's a real buzz-kill: the Blu-ray edition contains no extras. Optional. (D. Liebenson)
