Although it nearly sunk 20th Century Fox, this multi-million dollar musical based on the beloved stories by Hugh Lofting, is at least lovely to look at, thanks to Robert Surtees' vibrant cinematography. Rex Harrison stars as the good doctor who would rather "talk to the animals" than converse with humans, though he makes an exception for Anthony Newley, Samantha Eggar and William Dix, who join him on a quest for the Great Pink Sea Snail. The anamorphic widescreen mastering is crisp and bright, though the Dolby 4.0 soundtrack seems wasted on the rather lackluster series of forgettable tunes by Leslie Bricusse. An optional purchase.
