Just a year before his breakout role as the sensitive Stingo in Sophie's Choice, Peter MacNicol (best known as the stuttering lawyer on Ally McBeal) starred in this dullish 1981 sword-and-sorcery tale. As Galen, the apprentice to sorcerer Ulrich (Ralph Richardson), MacNicol fails to cut much of a dashing figure as the medieval Jedi-type knight out to make his Obi-Wan-like master proud. Tasked with slaying a rather cheesy-looking (by modern standards) dragon, the sorcerer-apparent eventually fulfills his ordained role, falling in requisite love along the way. Except for some noticeable grain in the darker scenes, the widescreen transfer on this extra-less disc is sharp, and the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack has a fair kick to it. Optional. (T. Rich)
