This might have been a halfway decent musical-comedy on the big screen. But Julien Temple's wide angle visual smorgasbord has not fared well in its transfer to video. People's noses talk to each other, and in one memorable dance sequence, the nightclub crowd cheers wildly while the dancer performs somewhere off the TV screen. The story, based on the song by MTV hostess/singer Julie Brown, features Geena Davis as Valerie Dale, a valley girl who gets a surprise visit when a spaceship bearing three furry aliens crash lands in her swimming pool. As the pedestrian plot bounces Valerie back and forth between her two-timing fiancé Ted and one of the aliens (Jeff Goldblum, Davis's real life husband), the film spirals downward into tired sex jokes and clichéd alien-in-the-big-city situations. Two bright points occasionally redeem the film: Julie Brown as the singing Candy, owner of the Curl Up and Dye Salon, and Michael McKean as the surfer bum Woody (he delivers the film's best line: "Does Pinocchio have a wooden butt?") Still, the video transfer is so frustrating, that it's often difficult to figure out what's going on. Not recommended. (R. Pitman)
