Exactly what you would expect from the first film outing of the writers of Airplane and the director of Animal House, this very uneven series of comic vignettes is perhaps best enjoyed for its historical significance (it was made in 1977) as the precursor to the scattershot Saturday Night Live style of humor. Anchor Bay's excellent transfer, oddly enough, only underlines the film's weak tech credits, but this still deserves a look-see, particularly for its hilarious commentary by the filmmakers, who take joyful pride in pointing out their first film foibles. An optional purchase. (S. C. Sickles)[Blu-ray Review—July 16, 2013—Shout! Factory, 83 min., R, Blu-ray: $19.98—Making its Blu-ray debut, 1977's The Kentucky Fried Movie sports a decent transfer with a DTS-HD mono soundtrack. Bonus features include audio commentary by director John Landis, co-writers David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams, and producer Robert K. Weiss, a career conversation with the Zucker brothers (62 min.), and an original trailer. Bottom line: a minor cult classic makes a welcome debut on Blu-ray.]
