One of the Embassy International Collection films (others include Luis Bunuel's That Obscure Object of Desire, and Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon). This powerful Federico Fellini film which won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film stars Anthony Quinn as the brutal, insensitive strong man who performs his chain-breaking act in villages across the Italian countryside. Giulietta Masina gives a heartrending performance as the spirited waif who accompanies, and is brutalized by, Quinn. Our only reservation is the print quality: there are occasional skips and jumps (still, the print is from Janus Films--one of the best foreign film depositories in the world--it may well be the best available). Because of the film's importance and its low price, we recommend it.

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
