Elvis Presley's debut feature film holds up a lot better than many of his subsequent star vehicles, not only because it sports a stronger plot but also because the old hip-swiveler is backed by a sturdy cast (in fact, Elvis takes third billing, although he gets the lion's share of attention-grabbing scenes). The story takes place during the Civil War, with Presley playing the youngest of four Texas brothers. His oldest sibling (Richard Egan), fighting those damn Yankees, is reported dead and his brokenhearted girlfriend (Debra Paget) marries Presley's character, who has worshipped her for years. At war's end, however, the older brother returns—rumors of his demise having been greatly exaggerated—setting up a romantic triangle and tense confrontations. Along the way, Elvis sings four songs, including the title tune, which became one of his biggest hits. As for the movie, well, Gone With the Wind it ain't, but Love Me Tender is still reasonably entertaining, and historically interesting for its look at a young Elvis not yet defined by the iconic image that eventually morphed into a caricature. Presented with an excellent transfer, DVD extras include audio commentary by Elvis historian Jerry Schilling, three featurettes, and a photo gallery. Recommended. (E. Hulse)[Blu-ray Review—Aug. 13, 2013—Fox, 89 min., not rated, $19.99—Making its first appearance on Blu-ray, 1956's Love Me Tender sports a great transfer and a DTS-HD 5.1 soundtrack. Extras include audio commentary by Elvis historian Jerry Schilling, the behind-the-scene featurette “Elvis Hits Hollywood” (13 min.), “The Colonel & The King” on Elvis's manager (11 min.), and “The Birth & Boom of the Elvis Hit” featurette (8 min.), as well as a soundtrack segment (8 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: a beloved Elvis vehicle makes a welcome debut on Blu-ray.]
