Who can forget where they were 'When Ali Met Preppie' in Arthur Hiller's 1972 tearjerker based on Erich Segal's best-selling novel? Nominated for 7 Oscars (winning only one for score), Love Story follows the tragic tale of two lovers reasonably distant on the socioeconomic scale: Oliver Barrett IV (Ryan O'Neal), a Harvard hockey jock law student from an old money family, and Jennifer Cavilleri (the wooden Ali McGraw), a work study student from a no money family. They marry, find success, and then.... Although it's hard to get worked up over Love Story today (full disclosure: yes, I squirted a few very un-15-year-old-boy-like tears in 1970), the film retains a certain charm. Fans will flock to this nicely remastered disc featuring a solid "making of" documentary and a director's commentary track. Recommended. (R. Pitman)
