Based on a story by B. Traven (Treasure of the Sierra Madre), this moving allegory explores the question of man's fate through the tale of Macario (Ignacio Lopez Tarso), a Mexican woodcutter. Macario and his teeming family live in poverty and constantly hover on the brink of starvation. When he says that he wishes he had a turkey all to himself, his wife steals one for him, and Macario takes it into the wilderness. There he is tested by Satan, God, and finally Death. The last he makes a pact with, and becomes a renowned healer in the countryside. Only the time is pre-Enlightenment, and members of the local Inquisition hear about Macario, and he is brought before the tribunal. Beautifully filmed and acted, Macario has the mesmerizing quality of a good fairy tale, albeit a rather dark one. An Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Film, Macario is highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
