Based on Mary O'Hara's book, this 1943 family classic is the quintessential boy-and-his-horse coming-of-age drama. Roddy McDowall stars as 10-year-old Kenny, a failing student and disaster-prone youth who yearns for a colt to call his own. Kenny's father (Preston Foster), a Colorado rancher, is frustrated by his hapless son (not to mention, perhaps, his inexplicable British accent), but he reluctantly relents, hoping that the training and discipline will make "a good man" out of him. Into Kenny's life gallops the wild and untamed Flicka, bringing joy, companionship, and life lessons. While the Technicolor cinematography is breathtaking, the DVD transfer is noticeably less than pristine and the disc itself is extra-less. Still, this is a must for horse enthusiasts, although more jaded viewers may find it a bit tame. Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
