Only You

Stars: Andrew McCarthy (Weekend At Bernie's, Year Of The Gun), Kelly Preston (Twins, Run), Helen Hunt (Project X, Next Of Kin). Brat packer Andrew McCarthy plays Clifford Godfrey, a designer of doll house furniture, who gets dumped by his dream girl on Christmas Eve. Trying to get a refund on plane tickets to an unnamed tropical resort (a.k.a. a California beach), Cliff locks horns with travel agent Claire (Helen Hunt) and loses. Downing his sorrows in the local bar, he's approached by the drunk and beautiful Amanda (Kelly Preston) who has also just been given the heave-ho, and the two abandoned lovers decide to become each other's bandaid and head for the tropics. Once there, Clifford runs into none other than plain Claire (who's really a photographer moonlighting as a travel agent). Needless to say, Clifford must make a choice between the two women. Except for the all too brief scenes of humor and warmth between McCarthy and Hunt, Only You prefers to go for the obvious and the obnoxious. As Amanda, Preston does an extremely poor airhead impersonation (who is still smart enough to go sailing, dining, or whatever with any available male other than Clifford at all times). McCarthy's Clifford (who clearly doesn't recognize the cold shoulder when it brushes up against him) trots along after Amanda like a moronic pup. Hunt, who is a better actor than either of her cohorts, is left playing the poor woman who keeps bouncing back to Mr. Rubberneck. Audience: Die-hard romantic comedy fans only.
