Our Town

This American Playhouse version of Thornton Wilder's classic play of small-town Americana features another winning performance by Hal Holbrook as the stage manager (narrator), and good supporting performances by Robby Benson, Glynnis O'Connor, Ned Beatty, Sada Thompson, and Barbara Bel Geddes. The play sets up daily life in the fictional town of Grovers Corners, and then narrows down to the courtship and ensuing marriage of Benson and O'Connor. Holbrook coolly sets us up for the final act, and in his own wry, haunting way he leads us down the dusty road to death in Grovers Corners--and finally to Wilder's odd, but oddly comforting, version of the afterlife.
