Yves Montand stars as Jean Larrea, an exiled Spanish revolutionary who makes a comfortable living as a screenwriter, but still--along with his wife Eve--goes to Spain from his home base in France to run diplomatic missions. Set in 1975, the main story follows the thorny relationship between Jean and his young adult son Laurent following Eve's death on one of the missions. It is 1975, and Laurent cannot comprehend why his father as a successful French writer is still devoted to Franco's overthrow. Jean, on the other hand, despises his son's lack of commitment to anything, let alone a political cause. The bridge to understanding between the generations is provided by Laurent's friend Julia (Miou-Miou), who takes up residence with Jean and subtly pleas Laurent's case. Over time, Jean is forced to re-examine his life in general, and his relationship with his son, in particular. Director Joseph Losey (The Servant) has crafted an absorbing psychological study, heightened by the always commanding screen presence of Montand, and a fine early performance by Miou-Miou (Entre Nous, La Lectrice). Recommended for libraries with large foreign video collections. (R. Pitman)
