The “other” 1991 Robin Hood (its more famous counterpart starred Kevin Costner as the titular "Prince of Thieves”), this cable-TV-aired version featured another unlikely American, Patrick Bergin, as the famed nobleman who defies the tyrant Prince John (Edward Fox) by taking up with a band of robbers in Sherwood Forest. Directed by Britain's John Irvin (The Dogs of War), this version has a somewhat rougher, grittier appeal than Costner's take, with less dewy variations on such familiar sights as Robin's bruising first encounter with Little John (David Morrissey) or the traditionally regal deportment of Maid Marian (Uma Thurman), who is surprisingly bratty here. The international cast also includes Jurgen Prochnow, Jeroen Krabbe, and Conrad Asquith. Presented in both anamorphic widescreen and full screen versions (the full screen version is listed as having a 1:66:1 aspect ratio, and the widescreen version as 2:35:1 on the DVD jacket, but the Internet Movie Database lists the “widescreen” original as being 1:78:1, which would account for the two versions looking nearly identical) on an otherwise extra-less flipper disc, this is recommended.
