"Indescribable... Indestructible... Nothing Can Stop It!" Yep, you guessed it, it's that spine-chilling horror classic about an "inescapable" (cripes, it only travels 2 feet a minute!) glob of deadly raspberry marmalade. Not campy enough to be truly funny, and not scary enough to stand on its own, this late '50s fave would likely languish on EP-speed VHS if it didn't mark the breakout(?) debut of its lead, Steve McQueen. Still, fans will gush over the attention Criterion has given this one, with a beautiful mastering in "blood-curdling color," two full-length commentaries and a "Blob-abilia" scrapbook. Collectible, perhaps, for its place in B-movie history, but likely to be of interest only to those nostalgic over their first matinee grope. An optional purchase. (S. C. Sickles)[Blu-ray Review—Mar. 12, 2013—Criterion, 82 min., not rated, $39.95—Making its first appearance on Blu-ray, 1958's The Blob sports a great transfer with uncompressed mono sound. Extras include two audio commentaries (one by producer Jack H. Harris and film historian Bruce Eder; the other by director Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. and costar Robert Fields), a “Blobabilia!” gallery (including collector Wes Shank's rare stills, posters, props, and more), a trailer, and a booklet with an essay by critic Kim Newman. Bottom line: hardly a great film, but one that definitely has a loyal following, The Blob looks super on Blu-ray.]
