The otherworldly Gene Tierney stars as the widowed Mrs. Muir, who moves with her steadfast housekeeper and children (one of them played by Natalie Wood) into a house by the ocean. Rex Harrison, in one of his signature roles, costars as the ghostly spirit of the robust Captain Gregg, who meets his match in this spunky and determined woman. Joesph L. Mankiewicz's 1947 fantasy classic is a supernatural love story and a stellar example of studio system-era filmmaking. But even devotees may find the wide-ranging two audio commentary tracks on this "Studio Classics" release a case of too much information: one track features cinema professor Jeanine Bassinger and Mankiewicz biographer Kenneth Geist; the other has visual effects specialist Greg Kimble, and Christopher Husted representing the estate of legendary composer Bernard Herrmann--all four are recorded separately. On the plus side, however, there is a Biography episode on Harrison. In any case, the film still casts its haunting spell--and thanks to a sharp new digital remastering--does so with style. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. (K. Extras include two audio commentaries (the first by visual effects supervisor and film historian Greg Kimble along with Christopher Husted from composer Bernard Herrmann's estate; the second with film historian Jeanine Basinger and director Joseph L. Mankiewicz biographer Kenneth Geist), and trailers. Bottom line: a beloved classic makes a welcome debut on Blu-ray.]
