Stars: Davide Benchini, Lucrezia Lante Della Rovere . Writer/director Pupi Avati's Italian romantic comedy is a pretty good movie, but it will take most viewers two viewings to figure that out, because: numero-uno--this is a talky film, with subtitles on the screen most of the time; and numero-two-o--it's an ensemble piece featuring about 30 performers. Ergo, you're either reading or trying to figure out who's who through most of the first viewing. A bit frustrating. Basically, the story is about a two-family engagement meal. Angelo and Silvia (city mouse and country mouse, respectively) have announced marriage plans and Silvia's rustic and ribald clan is hosting the celebration feast on their farm. As is often the case in foreign romantic comedies, serious rifts between "boys and girls" are here solved with trysts in the hay as opposed to endless analyzing. Some will find this amusing; others will consider it naive. The cover art's tag line is from Marcia Pally for Penthouse: "Food, Celebration, and Sex." This is far more accurate than "Story," since the plot is about as loose as they come. Lovely to look at, and filled with nice moments. Audience: Although it's being positioned as a Babette's Feast kind of film the only thing the two share in common is food (it's sort of like linking Jaws with Prince of Tides since they both feature water). Upscale filmgoers will enjoy.
