Unlike the action-oriented cowboy pictures of contemporaneous star Tom Mix, William S. Hart favored more realistic, character-driven films--a preference that caused him to fall out of favor with audiences sooner. Released in 1925, Tumbleweeds marked Hart's last major performance and, ironically, features a rousing, action-packed finale. The venerable star plays a stoic cowpoke who joins the Oklahoma land rush of 1889, falling in love with an aspiring homesteader in the process. Taken from a 1939 reissue of the silent classic, the re-release contains a brief introduction with a heartfelt tribute to the American West by a sentimental Hart. Complemented by a pleasing piano score, the sepia-tinted print has its share of scratches and other flaws but still maintains a certain quaint appeal. Larger cinema collections will want to consider; a strong optional purchase elsewhere. (T. Rich)
