David Beckham: Life of an Icon offers a rounded portrait of the legendary soccer player and world celebrity, giving equal weight to the ups as well as the considerable downs of his career. Beginning with his childhood, the documentary chronicles how English football club Manchester United built a relationship with Beckham from the time he was a mere boy, capturing his loyalty and starting him in professional competition at age 16. A superior athlete, Beckham also quickly became an object of superstar worship, making him the most photographed and written-about Brit since Princess Diana. Following the winding path of Beckham's life chapter-by-chapter, the film covers Beckham's marriage to a Spice Girl (the former Victoria “Posh” Adams), his petulant behavior on the soccer field during the 1998 season that cost England a chance at the World Cup, and his initial gutsy decision to continue playing in England despite the wrath of former admirers. But injuries affected him in a 2004 run for the World Cup, and the film ends with Beckham coming to America to play for the L.A. Galaxy. A somewhat cautionary sports tale about staying focused, DVD extras include bonus interviews. Recommended. Aud: P. (T. Keogh)
