Providing an overview of defining moments from the 1800s, from historical events and scientific breakthroughs to literary landmarks and technological innovations, 19th Century Turning Points in U.S. History features eight volumes (each covering a little more than a decade) on four discs, with each disc containing six-to-eight episodes approximately five minutes long. Combining artwork, newsreel footage, and dramatic recreations, the program looks at such seminal events as the Louisiana Purchase (1803), completion of the Erie Canal (1825), fall of the Alamo (1836), publication of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), beginning of the Pony Express mail service (1860), and Thomas Edison's demonstration of the "incandescent lamp" (1879), among others. In addition to seeing these "turning points" in a historical context, viewers will also learn about how these events continue to impact society today. As an excellent bonus, the easily navigated discs also feature a DVD-ROM accessible library of primary source documents and maps (including blank maps for testing purposes), as well as English and Spanish subtitle options.
