It's hard to keep track of how many times interviewees sing Elvis Presley's praises with the words "he enjoyed that look on your face" and "he was so giving" in Dan Griffin's repetitive documentary about the King's penchant for giving expensive gifts, which were, more often than not, brand new Cadillacs. Yes, there are some good moments here, like an interview with the man who told Presley to wear his collar flipped up (Bernard Lansky, whose Memphis men's wear store Elvis shopped at his entire life out of loyalty). But the endless parade of former assistants, girlfriends, nurses, karate instructors, bodyguards, and hairdressers--all saying much the same thing in between personal anecdotes--gets a little old, especially since Griffin asks so few follow-up questions. Why doesn't the backup singer still own her Caddy? What ever happened to the disabled girl who was given the $30,000 ring off Elvis's hand at a concert? This is basically for hardcore Elvis fans--and perhaps not even them since the only music in the movie consists of (mostly) awful tribute songs (including two self-indulgent music videos performed by the film's producer). Not a necessary purchase. Aud: P. (R. Blackwelder)
