While there are other powerful documentaries chronicling the events surrounding the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, few have the astonishing, raw, street-level eyewitness grit of 7 Days in September, which compiles footage and testimony from 27 independent (often ersatz) videomakers who captured New York City sights and sounds on that fateful day and during the haunted, nightmarish, yet heroic week that followed. Rather than spend most of its time focusing on the explosion and gradual collapse of the Twin Towers, the film takes us around Manhattan, where ash and dust turn ordinary people into walking phantoms filled with great compassion and driven to spontaneous acts of heroism. Footage shot from Ground Zero--in the first 24 hours after the attack--resembles some kind of science fiction dystopia, while scenes of vigils, street corner debates, and tributes to rescue workers underscore faith in the human spirit. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: C, P. (T. Keogh)
