Kind of An Inconvenient Truth minus Al Gore and the green politics, A Global Warning? argues that acute climate change is not a contemporary development solely fueled by industrial pollution. Instead, these disturbing shifts are part of an evolution of the planet that stretches back some 600 million years, accounting for wiping out the “mega-mammals” (the mastodon, saber-toothed tiger), among other species. Combining excellent graphics with interviews of scientists, this History Channel-aired documentary explores a wide range of historic natural phenomena—such as volcanic eruptions and even meteor showers—that have had a profound impact on climate levels. A Global Warning? doesn't fully absolve our contemporary society from messing up the environment, but it does somewhat downplay the effects of industrial pollution and ecologically wasteful practices, thereby weakening the argument advocated by many environmental scientists. Not all viewers will accept this somewhat alternative reasoning over the former Vice President's Nobel Prize-winning positions, but the film's fluid presentation of scientific data and handsome production qualities make this well worth a look. DVD extras include additional scenes. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (P. Hall)
