A feast for guitarists, A Guitar Odyssey is essentially a 90-minute conversation with a collection of well-known rock and country guitarists, and while concert footage is sprinkled here and there throughout, the main thrust is about loving guitars, whether they be acoustic, hollow-bodied, solid-bodied or bass. Artists who share their thoughts and stories with us include Joe Perry from Aerosmith, The Moody Blues' Justin Wilson, Tom Petty, Emmylou Harris, Billy Corgan, Chet Atkins, Yes axemaster Steve Howe, Stevie Winwood, Travis Tritt, the great B. B. King, former Eagle Don Felder, Peter Frampton, Who bassist John Entwistle, Mark Bryan, Jack Cassady, Mick Ralphs and Glen Tipton. The omnipresence of Gibson guitars, coupled with the total absence of Fenders, Guilds, Epiphones, etc., leads one to wonder whether Gibson U.S.A. had a financial stake in this project (still, we do get to hear Les Paul explaining how he built the first solid-body guitar, which eventually became the world-famous Gibson Les Paul, one of the definitive sounds of rock music). Guitar players young and old will love this entertaining program, as will rock fans. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (P. Van Vleck)
